THE PUPILS

This picture was made on Valentinesday 2012 together with Sabine De Vos. She was the first embassador of Cunina.

This first picture was made in September, the first month of the new schoolyear.

The girls: from left to right:

Ellen D. - Amber - Jana - Jessica - Charanne - Marilou - Cato - Faye - Laura - Ellen V. - Karen - Phoebe

The boys: from left to rigth:

Tanguy - strong Cédric - Denim - Florent - Nzoye - Wannes (horizontal) - Jellen - Robbe - strong Djah'ma - Tom

Fun-facts: Cédric is the tallest and Laura is the oldest (born in September 1997). Jellen is the smallest and Phoebe is the youngest (born in January 1999).

What do Belgian teenagers do during their free time and holidays? Some pupils love to make music (playing the guitar or the piano), other pupils love to sport (football, swimmings, playing tennis and dancing are the most popular sports), other pupils are a member of a youth movement. They all love watching televison and playing games on the computer... (during the cold evenings or in winter when it is too cold to go outside or when it is bad weather in Belgium).

OUR SCHOOL

Some pictures of our school: the Erasmusatheneum in De Pinte. There are about 80 teachers and 508 pupils.

We our situated in a green area (which is special for a school in our surroundings!)

How foreigners often describe Belgium:

  • They are very friendly. They like beer and French Fries. (Marie Leonard, Frankrijk)
  • They are a little bit closed in the beginning, but when they open up they are really nice. ( Istanov Siro, Hungarije)
  • Here, you don’t have poor people! (Renato da Silva, Brazilië)
  • Houses and buildings are kept very nice. It seems they spend lots of time and money on their houses and gardens.  (Henbing Lu, China)
  • Very good educational system , social security and social assistance.( Dan Cosmin, Roemenië)
  •  The transport is very busy. (Carlos Romero, Mexico)

OUR COUNTRY

This is our country Belgium with our neighbouring countries: The Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, France and accross the North Sea: the UK.

As you can see, there are 3 official languages in Belgium. We live in the yellow part, which is called Flanders, our mother tongue is Dutch (just a our colleagues from The Netherlands). In the pink area the inhabitants speak French. In the (very small) blue area the inhabitants speak German.

King Albert II                            Crownprince Philippe and Crownprincess Elisabeth

King Albert his eldest grandchild is Elisabeth, she will be our first Queen ... she is only 10 years old now. We have a government with 15 ministers.

Our school is situated in De Pinte near the city Ghent (which is about the centre of Flanders). Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the capital of the European Commission. The president of the European Commission is a Belgian. London and Paris are not so far away!

Religion: in Belgium most people are Roman Catholics or atheists ... most people don't practise their religion ... (don't go to church every day...)

The surface of Belgium is 30.528 km². We have about 11 million inhabitants so our population density is high. The average temperature in winter is about 0° Celcius during the night / 5° Celcius during the day  ... the average temperature in summer is about 13° Celcius during the night / 22 ° Celcius during the day. We have a lot of rain too ... the last 5 years we have been able to play in snow each winter ...

SIGHTSEEING IN BRUSSELS

the Atomium                                                 Manneke Pis with special clothing     Manneke Pis on an ordinary day .... (naked)

SIGHTSEEING IN GHENT

a charming old village. Every summer there is a big music festival "De Gentse Feesten" in the centre of the city!

THE ARDENNES: a place with very beautiful nature (hills, lakes ...) La Roche (castle on "rocks")

Durbuy: "the smallest town in the world"

This is BELGIAN

A lot of European countries, including Belgium, use the euro as a currency

beer                                                                      belgian chocolat

In English language people refer to “French Fries” … most of the time people think they come from France … it only refers to the language French.

We’ve already told you that there are 3 official languages in Belgium: French is one of them…

During one of the World Wars the allied troops (England, Ireland, USA, Canada … = they all have English as mother tongue) came to our country to liberate us!

Lots of people were starving in this dreadful period… in the Walloon Provinces (where they speak French, so the soldiers heard the French language) they used to fry fish … they couldn’t find animals/fish anymore … so they cut an “ordinary potato” in thin slices and fried this (instead of the fish) … the real “Belgian ‘French Fries’ ” were born!

Typical for the real Belgian ones: they are baked twice and we eat them with (lots of ) mayonnaise!

Famous Belgian vegetables: not a lot of people like them...: Brussels Sprouts (the green vegetables) and Belgian Endives (the white vegetables)

Comic stories such as the Smurfs and Tin Tin

Did you know that "mannequin" is in fact a Dutch word?

TEACHERS

Miss Lien Van Acker

Hi everyone! My name is Lien. I'm 24 years old. This is my first year as a teacher, actually. So I'm still very young.

If you want to know something more about me you can always ask me questions, but I can give this information already!

I love to dance ! Streetdance, hip hop, salsa, you name it . I enjoy dancing very much . Also I am starting to learn how to play the piano this year. A good friend of mine is giving me piano lessons and in return I'm giving him dancing lesssons. Furthermore, I like to draw, paint, and travel around the world ... I am therefore really looking forward to getting to know you people. I'm also really curious about

the country that you live in, The Philippines.  I wonder what it's like to live there, I wonder what places look like and how you spend your days ...

This is a picture of me celebrating new year (yellow hat)

Mrs Evelyne Catry

At the end of this month I'll turn 28 (just as the last 3 years). I'm the mother of  2. My son will turn 2 years old the day after my birthday. My daughter will turn 4 years old at the end of April.
I'm passionated about Asia! Really! A long time ago... I even had a penpal (a girl named Lily) in the Philippines! (the old fashion way: snailmail).  Only 3 weeks before the destroying tsunami I was on the Thai Phi-Phi-islands. My husband and I visited lots of places in Thailand and Malaysia ... maybe the Philippines can be the next Asian country!

Nice meeting you all!

Hello! We all think that your introduction is very informative. It makes us want to visit you and your place someday. Your school looks very nice. It's very clean and green! We love french fries, too! We eat them almost everyday. (Maybe you could ship us some someday :D) We also like the Smurfs and TinTin. As well as chocolates. One day, we will come to you and visit those castles and you can show us around! :)

1 remark: our Brussels sprouts are very small cabages... but you really can compare them (texture & taste!) with the green (big) cabages!

From: Going for Green Advocates - A team, STC Philippines

Hello everybody! We enjoyed reading your page about yor country especially with regards to how French fries was created. We were very fascinated with the different facts that we've read. Discovering about your country made us more eager to learn and exchange ideas with you. We find it such a coincidence because we were just discussing about Flanders since it was where the images of the Holy Child Jesus were first manufactured. Here in the Philippines, we call the image Sr. Santo Nino. Recently, we just held a fun festival in honor of him called Sinulog.
Hopefully we can visit your country and experience the cold weather, the delicious chocolates and most especially FRENCH FRIES!!! We're also looking forward for your visit here in the Philippines and experience our colorful culture.

Hope to hear from all of you soon! :))

from Denise - Your place is very amazing. I hope I can visit the place someday, especially the castles.

Hi Evelyne and Lien! Nice to hear much about Belgium. Belgium is close to our hearts in Saint Mary's because our founders were Belgisn missionaries. We still have Fr. Gerry, a CICM from Roeselare. He hsa lived here in Bayombong, Philippines for more than 30 years.
The pipils al look beautiful. I'm pretty sure my students would all love to see your pictures. We have a schedule of viewing them tomorrow.
Your Brussels sprouts look very much the same as the cabbages across the yard of Fr. Gerry. And your French fries story is interesting. My husband is into a small food business and we do sell French fries!
Mrs. Evelyne must be a doting mother -like me :)- to her 2 kids who look adorable. Ms. Lien is really young and must be full of enthusiasm. Good for your pupils. I started teaching at age 19. I'm now 35. Wish I could also see Belgium. Looking forward to hearing more from you guys! Aireen, SMU Bayombong, Philippines

Yes it certainly is, well done Evelyne.....
I see 2 pictures resized: DSC08655.jpg from 1,6 Mb to 38 Kb and DSC08654.jpg from 1,8 Mb to 85 kb
This makes the page 50x faster :-) Yeahhhh... good team work !!

OK, will do so! (but have to ... try first...)

Bob Hofman said

Hoi Evelyne.. you really have the taste of it, don't you :-) so much fun to see your contributionss.
Request though: please resize your pictures (see image reziser in sidebar menu & guide how to use)

Five 2 Mb pictures in one page.. makes a 10Mb page which migjht easliy take 3-5 minutes to open in Countries with low bandwidth.
(and this LC had already 1200 views from over 17 countries!!)

So resize to a 600 x 400 pics image (still the size of a postcard) will make it open in less than 10 seconds.
Thanks for your efforts, enjoy the weekend, Bob
